چکیده

We thoroughly investigate a simple model representative of the recently synthesized Janus particles, i.e., colloidal spherical particles whose surface is divided into two areas of different chemical composition. When the two surfaces are solvophilic and solvophobic, these particles constitute the simplest example of surfactants. The phase diagram includes a colloidal-poor (gas), colloidal-rich (liquid) demixing region, which is progressively suppressed by the insurgence of micelles, providing the first model in which micellization and phase separation are simultaneously observed. The coexistence curve is found to be negatively sloped in the temperature-pressure plane, suggesting that Janus particles can provide a colloidal system with anomalous thermodynamic behavior.

Fabrication of Janus particles composed of poly (lactic-co-glycolic) acid and hard fat using a solvent evaporation method.

The feasibility of fabricating Janus particles based on phase separation between a hard fat and a biocompatible polymer was investigated. The solvent evaporation method used involved preparing an oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion with a mixture of poly (lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA), hard fat, and an organic solvent as the oil phase and a polyvinyl alcohol aqueous solution as the water phase. The J...

Controlled Emulsion Droplet Solvent Evaporation for Particle Production

In this work, we are motivated by the need to produce particles of well-controlled size, shape and morphology for general application in catalysis, environmental remediation, nanomedicine, pharmaceuticals, the development of new materials, and other fields. Moreover, our approaches are guided by the desire for continuous and scalable production, in contrast to the batch-wise processes typically...

Synthesis of Janus particles via kinetic control of phase separation in emulsion droplets.

A reaction-induced phase separation strategy in emulsion droplets has been developed to fabricate non-spherical Janus particles. The final morphology of the resulting Janus particles is controlled by a reaction sequence. These Janus particles are amphiphilic and show regio-selective adsorption orientation at oil/water interfaces.

A Pickering Emulsion Route to Swimming Active Janus Colloids

The field of active colloids is attracting significant interest to both enable applications and allow investigations of new collective colloidal phenomena. One convenient active colloidal system that has been much studied is spherical Janus particles, where a hemispherical coating of platinum decomposes hydrogen peroxide to produce rapid motion. However, at present producing these active colloi...

Janus balance of amphiphilic colloidal particles.

We introduce the notion of "Janus balance" (J), defined as the dimensionless ratio of work to transfer an amphiphilic colloidal particle (a "Janus particle") from the oil-water interface into the oil phase, normalized by the work needed to move it into the water phase. The J value can be calculated simply from the interfacial contact angle and the geometry of Janus particles, without the need t...
